Museum of Natural History: Micro Art Classes

Love nature, science, and art but don’t know where to start? Here is your opportunity to master a new skill and bring home your own environmentally inspired masterpiece after just one class. With varying types of art, each of these classes are independent from each other. They are all appropriate for all skill levels and are appropriate for individuals aged 16 and up. Be sure to dress casually, as the art supplies that the museum provides might get a bit messy!  Only the photography and oil paint classes take place outside. 

  • Saturday, May 3 from noon to 3pm: Stipple Art Use small dots to create the impression of texture, shading, or solidity. Learn this unique art style through step-by-step instruction by a master scientific illustrator. 
  • Friday, May 9 from 6-8pm: Nudibranch Painting Party Using the artist’s exhibit materials as references, participants will use acrylic paint and decorate their own 3D-printed nudibranch 
  • Friday, May 16 from 6-7:30pm: Nature Journaling Using watercolors, colored pencils, and other mixed media, participants will make artistic observations of miniature marvels found in the local ecosystem. 
  • Sunday, May 25 from 11am-1pm: Macrophotography Both cameras and smartphones are welcome. Magnify your photography skills by applying special micro and macro tips, tricks, and techniques to capture and shed light on the micro world around you. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. 
  • Saturday, May 31 from noon to 3pm: Oil Painting in Miniature This open-air art workshop will teach the techniques necessary to capture environmental perspectives through the creative use of negative space, layering, various stroke techniques, and more. Tyrrell Park.
