Loch Lomond: Water Quality Loch Walk

July 12 @ 11:00 am12:00 pm PDT

This Loch Walk coincides with the international Secchi Dip-In annual event!  Participate in citizen science recognized around the world by heading to the hidden gem of Loch Lomond in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Simple enough for children to use, the Secchi Disk is a diagnostic tool created in 1865 to measure water clarity.  Participants in the Loch Lomond Secchi Dip-In will have the chance to use the Secchi Disk to measure lake clarity, learn about Santa Cruz watershed, and explore park trails with a guide.  The measurements your group records can then be accessed around the world!

The monthly “Loch Walks” are included in the entry fee for the Recreation Area. There is a $10.00 charge per vehicle for entrance to the park. Walk participants are encouraged to dress for variable weather conditions and to wear proper footwear for hiking on dirt trails and for changes in elevation.

The Loch Lomond Recreation Area is a 180-acre reservoir and part of the 2,800-acre watershed land holdings that the City of Santa Cruz Water Department manages in the Newell Creek watershed. Loch Lomond serves as Santa Cruz City’s only drinking water reservoir.
